The word “orthosomy” is defined as the correct or proper posture of the body and plays a significant role in our daily life, as it forms the foundation for performing any movement. Whether our body is in motion or still, it works in a way that aims to maintain proper posture — whether we’re doing everyday tasks or exercising.
The key organ responsible for posture is the spine. Our spine is made up of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments, and muscles that provide its stability and mobility. If an injury occurs, it can negatively impact both stability and mobility, affecting balance and motor coordination. On the other hand, when the spine functions well, it not only supports stability and movement but also contributes to an improved quality of life.
So, a basic requirement for a healthy spine is exercise. By strengthening and stretching the abdominal and back muscles, we can achieve proper posture, as these muscles "embrace" the vertebrae and discs and help hold them in place, preventing injuries. It's essential to maintain proper posture at the beginning and end of a workout, as well as during everyday activities, whether we are standing or sitting.
For example, when standing:
-
Imagine something is pulling you upward from the top of your head
-
Shoulders down
-
Neck long
-
The neck aligned with the spine
-
Engaged abs and tight thighs
The same technique applies when sitting — for instance, at a desk or while driving:
-
The back should be well-supported against the seat
-
The seat height should be at hip level or slightly higher than the knees
-
The torso should remain upright and aligned
-
Knees bent, and
-
Feet flat on the floor
This way, your center of gravity stays aligned with the vertical axis.
Therefore, good posture plays a key role in keeping our body healthy. Beyond strengthening the muscles to support it, it's essential to teach children from a young age how to stand, sit, and exercise with proper posture. Eventually, this awareness becomes a natural habit and a lifestyle that supports them throughout life!
